This mini-exhibit was planned and organized with student curators from the Dr. Pedro Albizu Campos High School.
Puertorriqueña através de los Ojos de Otros
Una Exibición Curada por los Estudiantes de la Escuela Superior Dr. Pedro Albizu Campos

This June, in collaboration with Chicago’s Puerto Rican Cultural Center, the Newberry Spotlight Exhibit Series will feature Puerto Rican History through the Eyes of Others. This first-ever exhibition of Puerto Rican materials held in the Newberry Library’s collections was planned and organized with student curators from the Dr. Pedro Albizu Campos High School in Humboldt Park.

Puerto Rican History through the Eyes of Others explores the history of Puerto Rico over half a millennium, beginning roughly with the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1493 to an island called Boriquén by its inhabitants, the Taínos, and extending through the Spanish-American War of 1898.

Through objects written and drafted mostly by foreigners rather than by people identifying themselves as Puerto Rican, the exhibit looks at and charts the interests and aims of explorers, travelers, governments, artists, soldiers, merchants, and historians attracted to Puerto Rico.

“Flags of Steel” 2008

30 minutes (English)
Directed and produced by: Mildred Amador
Synopsis: Flags of Steel is a historical and cultural celebration of the Puerto Rican community in Chicago. The film takes us back to 1869 through a historical journey of the Humboldt Park neighborhood recognizing the first Europeans to arrive in the area and their influences that are still present to this day. The documentary recounts the struggles and triumphs that lead to the on-going transformation of this community and how Puerto Ricans still continue to withstand the test of time. One triumph is the design, engineering and fabrication of the gateways that mark “Paseo Boricua”. The two steel flags that rise high above the heart of Humboldt Park are symbolic of the many sacrifices and contributions made by Puerto Ricans in Chicago. The film pays homage to many Puerto Ricans who migrated to a cold Midwest to work in the steel mill industry of Chicago.
Additional Screening: “Between Western and California” by Amir George and short films by students of Roberto Clemente High School

Chicago - Saturday, July 26, 2008 – at dusk
“Mambo to Hip Hop” 2006

60 minutes (English)
Narrated by: Luis Chaluisan
Produced by: Elena Martínez - City Lore; Directed by: Henry Chalfant
Synopsis: Mambo to Hip Hop presents a panoramic view of the music that blossomed in the Latin community of the South Bronx from the late 1940s when mambo burst onto the New York cultural scene through the 1970s birth of hip hop. The film chronicles two generations who grew up literally on the same streets, and both used rhythm as their forms of rebellion--for the older generation it was pulsating Caribbean rhythms; for their children it was the rhythms of rap. The film aims to bring attention to Bronx communities that with few resources transformed the world’s pop culture through the making of Afro-Latin alliances where cultural memory held strong. The film shows vintage segments where drumbeats sent break-dancers into motion, some of them reviving the most flamboyant moves of the old mambo dancers. Mambo to Hip Hop features figures such as: Eddie Palmieri, Ray Barretto, Benny Bonilla, Orlando Marin, Manny Oquendo, Willie Colon, El Extreme, Africa Bambaata, Kool Herc, Charlie Chase, Fabel, Kid Freeze, Track II, Trace, Bom5, Sandra Maria Esteves and more.

Chicago - Saturday, August 9, 2008 – at dusk
“Ocho Puertas” 2003

90 minutes (Spanish with English subtitles)
Directed by: Paloma and Gabriel Suau; Produced by: Ninguna Ciencia
Synopsis: The film reproduces the original stage of the legendary nightclub “Ocho Puertas” in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. During the 60s and 70s, before big hotels and casinos, “Ocho Puertas” was the bohemian place where amateur and established Puerto Rican artists would meet to define the identity and interpret their song. This is the time of Vietnam, boleros, jazz, rock and salsa. Puerto Rico was registering a great economic growth and fusion of classes that produced new artistic movements, music and gathering places. That’s when Bern Zale from Brooklyn and Tor Boberg from Sweeden, a migrant couple moved to the island and immediately recognize the great amount talented artists in the island. Boberg and Zale decide to establish a nightclub in an old colonial house where the only rule was that the stage would be a place only to local artists. Ocho Puertas become in an important place for the local cultural production and soon is recognized internationally becoming a hang out place to figures such as Marlene Dietrich, Burt Bachrach, Chita Rivera, Sylvia Sims y Liza Minelli who named her dog “Ocho”.

Ocho Puertas propelled Puerto Rican artists that now are internationally known such as Chucho Avellanet, Lucecita Benítez, Danny Rivera, Glenn Monroig, Alberto Carrión and Grupo Raíces, Nydia Caro and Lucy Fabery. The film shows historic images and remembers figures such as folklorist Sylvia del Villard and pianist Joe Valiente. The film presents the old and new Puerto Rican bohemia with established figures such as Andy Montañez and Dave Valentín next to new figures like Michael Stuart, Luís Fonsi and Vivanativa. The film is the result of an extensive investigation in the historical archives of the National Foundation for the Popular Culture of Puerto Rico. The film is a gift to the generations that grew up with Ocho Puertas and to the music that was born there and now lives forever.

Chicago - Saturday, August 23, 2008 – at dusk
“Los Peloteros” 1950

90 minutes (Spanish)
Directed by: Jack Delano
Synopsis: “Los Peloteros” is the most celebrated film produced by the DivEdCo (Division of Education for the Community), an entity created by the Government of Puerto Rico in 1949 with the goal of changing attitudes of the Puerto Rican rural population. The DivEdCo produced films, posters and books to educate the community in issues such as health, cooperativism, citizen’s rights and education. DivEdCo’s film production was distinct because of the direct involvement of rural communities in their productions and the inclusion of people from the community as central actors in the films. The film tells the story of 10 children from the “Cielito” community committed to work together to raise funds to be able to play in a baseball league. The film is a classic of cinematography with the participation of more than 200 hundred children from 1950s’ rural Puerto Rico, as well as the participation of legendary Puerto Rican actress Miriam Colón in one of her first professional appearances.

In The Heights began as an original musical conceived by Lin-Manuel Miranda during his sophomore year at Wesleyan University. Upon graduating and returning home to New York, Miranda collaborated with director Thomas Kail to rework and restage the campus hit for a larger audience. That's how they captured the interest of producers Jill Furman, Kevin McCollum and Jeffrey Seller, whose previous work on Broadway included Rent, Avenue Q and The Drowsy Chaperone. After more workshops, more collaborators, and a stint at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre in Connecticut, the musical found a home at Off-Broadway's 37 Arts Theatre. Seven years after the idea was first born, In The Heights was ready for its New York theatrical debut.

During its Off-Broadway run at 37 Arts, In The Heights quickly became an audience phenomenon and a critical success. The response was unprecedented; the musical was luring both traditional and non-traditional theatergoers and garnering a huge cache of accolades, including the Outer Critics Circle Award and the Lucille Lortel Award for Best Musical. After over 200 performances, In The Heights played its final Off-Broadway show on July 15th, 2007, in order to begin preparations for a move to Broadway.
